Modern wall sconces — 85 fixtures with clean lines, honest materials and no ornament. A sconce does something a ceiling light cannot: it puts light at eye level, which is what makes a room feel lived in rather than lit.

Mounting heights that work

Beside a bed: 150–160 cm from the floor, 10–15 cm out from the edge of the mattress, so the switch falls within reach while you are sitting up. Either side of a bathroom mirror: 165 cm, 75–90 cm apart — side light beats overhead light because it does not cast shadows under your eyes. In a hallway: 150 cm, every 2.5–3 m. Flanking a sofa or artwork: 150–165 cm, centred on what you are lighting.

Hardwired, plug-in or rechargeable

Hardwired gives the cleanest look and needs an existing wall box or an electrician. Plug-in sconces hang on a single screw and run a cord to a socket — the right answer in a rental, and the cord can be run inside a cable channel if it bothers you. Rechargeable models need nothing at all: magnetic mount, USB-C, and you lift the light off to charge it. Each product page states which.

Up, down or both

An up-and-down sconce washes the wall in two directions and makes a narrow hallway feel wider. A downward-only reading arm keeps the light off a sleeping partner. A diffused globe or cylinder spreads light evenly in all directions and is the most forgiving in a small room.

Finishes

Brass and gold read warm and suit wood, plaster and deep paint colours. Black and gunmetal recede and work against white or tile. White and opal glass disappear almost entirely. Travertine, marble and walnut are the quieter options when you want texture instead of shine.
